Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are common athletic injuries. The mechanism of injury is usually a blow to the lateral part of the knee, causing the tibia to translate anteriorly while the knee is in slight flexion. Lateral meniscal tears occur in about half of acute ACL tears. Patients will usually say they felt a “pop,” and their knee will then start swelling. The Lachman test will be positive. The X-ray is often normal. MRI helps confirm the diagnosis. Treatment is surgical.
