Ectopic Pregnancy: The Daily PANCE Blueprint

A. Ovary
B. Uterine scar
C. Abdominal cavity
D. Cervix
E. Fallopian tube

Answer and topic summary

The answer is E. Fallopian tube

An ectopic pregnancy is an extrauterine pregnancy. The most common site of an ectopic pregnancy is the fallopian tube (97%). The biggest risk factor is a previous ectopic pregnancy; other risk factors include infertility, pelvic inflammatory disorder, IVF, progesterone-secreting IUD, and congenital abnormalities of the tube. Clinical features include pelvic/abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding, small uterus, and possibly tender abdomen or adnexal tenderness. Diagnosis can be confirmed with transvaginal sonography. Treatment of an ectopic pregnancy can be survival or medical (methotrexate). Methotrexate is preferred when all of these criteria are met: patient is stable serum hCG < 5000 mIU/mL, no fetal cardiac activity on TVUS.
