Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum. Syphilis has various clinical features, which depend on the stage of the disease process. Patients with a a primary infection will present with a chancre (painless ulcer, with raised indurated markings). Those with a secondary infection may present with a diffuse rash (involving the entire trunk and extremities including the palms and soles), fever, lymphadenoapthy, etc. People with late syphilis have CNS and cardiovascular involvement. Serologic testing should be performed to confirm the diagnosis. Parenterally-delivered penicillin G is the first-line treatment of choice for all stages.
