Chancroid is an infection caused by the bacterium Haemophilus ducreyi. It is characterized by one or more deep, painful, genital ulcers and tender, suppurative inguinal lymphadenopathy (buboes). It is primarily a sexually transmitted infection (transmission has to occur via direct sexual contact with the ulcerative lesions of an infected individual). The treatment is antibiotics. Options include azithromycin 1g orally x 1, ceftriaxone 250 mg IM x 1, ciprofloxacin 500 mg BID x 3 days, or erythromycin 500 mg orally TID x 7 days.
