Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) is the most common type of contact dermatitis. ICD is an inflammatory dermatological disorder due to a chemical or physical agent coming into contact with the skin. Common irritants include detergents, surfactants, acids, oxidizing agents (like bleach or benzoyl peroxide), alkaloids, solvents, metal tools, fiberglass, dust, and oil. On physical exam you may note localized erythema, edema, vesicles, bullae, and oozing. Diagnosis is usually clinical. Management includes avoiding the irritant, emollients, and topical steroids.
