Schizophrenia is a psychiatric disorder involving psychosis with associated impairments in social and occupational functioning. It is one of the most disabling medical disorders. The DSM-5 criteria for schizophrenia are as follows: ≥2 of the following present during a 1-month period (+ signs of disturbance for > 6 months):
- Delusion*
- Hallucination*
- Disorganized speech*
- Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior
- Negative symptoms
*1 symptom has to be a blue item
Clinical features of schizophrenia include negative symptoms, which are actually more common (i.e., flat affect, apathy, poor grooming, reduced speech) and positive symptoms (hallucinations – mostly auditory, delusions, disorganized speech). Management of schizophrenia includes antipsychotics (2nd generation is preferred). Patient should all be screened for suicide as ~30% will attempt suicide.
