Contraceptive Methods: The Daily PANCE Blueprint
Which of the following contraceptive methods is the most effective at preventing pregnancy?
A. Male condoms
B. Combined oral contraceptives
C. Copper intrauterine device
D. Withdrawal method
E. Fertility awareness
Answer and topic summary
The answer is C. Copper intrauterine device
There are various hormonal contractive methods: combined oral contraceptive pills, progestin-only contraceptive pills, vaginal ring, injectable progestin, progestin intrauterine device (IUD), subdermal progestin implant (Nexplanon), and contraceptive patch. The most effective methods are long-acting reversible contraceptives (IUDs and contraceptive implants). While those are most effective, the best contraceptive method is the one a patient will use consistently. Selection should be individualized based on: medical eligibility, desired bleeding patterns, need for STI protection, patient preference, and access/cost. Contraindications to hormonal contraceptive methods include thromboembolism, coagulopathy, coronary heart disease, stroke, estrogen-dependent tumors, vasculitis, smoking (>35 years of age), migraine with aura, and of course pregnancy.
