Candida albicans (an oval, budding yeast) is the most common cause of candidiasis. It actually occurs naturally on the skin. Overgrowth of Candida albicans can occur on the skin, especially in intertriginous areas (e.g., gluteal folds, under the breast, axillae). Risk factors for infection include moisture, immunocompromised state (HIV, DM, transplant patients), certain medications, and smoking. It is also very common in infants (secondary to prolonged wetness and diaper wear). Clinical features include erythematous patches and satellite lesions. Treatment is topical antifungals (e.g., clotrimazole, miconazole, nystatin for 7-14 days.
