Congenital varicella syndrome (CVS) occurs when a mother is infected by the varicella-zoster virus (VZV) during the first or second trimester. It is rare. Complications and clinical features include hypertrophic scars, limb defects, seizures, IUGR, hydrocephalus, cataracts, chorioretinitis, cortical atrophy, and intellectual disability. Diagnosis is made typically by classic prevention of diffuse rash; if needed a vesicular lesions can be scrapped for PCR.
