Answer and topic summary

The answer is D. 75% of domestic assault cases occur before the couple separates

Domestic violence is defined by violence in a domestic setting and is often used as a synonym for intimate partner violence (IPV). IPV is prevalent worldwide and is often underreported and under-recognized by providers. It impacts women more than men. It can result in physical injuries, fetal loss/injury, psychological problems, social isolation, and even death. Unfortunately, women are more likely to be assaulted when attempting to leave the relationship; in fact, about 75% of domestic assaults occur after separation. The USPSTF recommends screening ALL females of childbearing age for IPV. Signs of abuse include bruises, low self-esteem, constantly having to check in with their partner, and overly worried about pleasing their partner. This topic should be brought up with patients with compassion. Management includes assessing and treating all physical injuries, giving resources to referral agencies (legal, shelter, etc), and establishing a safety plan.
