B. Coxsackievirus A16
C. Human herpesvirus 6
D. Parvovirus B19

Answer and topic summary

The answer is D. Parvovirus B19

Erythema infectiosum, also known as 5th disease, is a viral infection caused by parvovirus B19. Usually, it occurs in children between 5 and 15 years old. Transmission is mainly via droplets from respiratory secretions. Classic clinical findings include fever and a malar rash involving the checks with oral pallor (“slapped cheek rash”) that progresses into a maculopapular rash on the extremities (with a reticular or lacy-like appearance, usually on extensor surfaces). The disease resolves on its own usually, and symptom management should be given as indicated (e.g., Tylenol for fevers).
