Erythema infectiosum, also known as 5th disease, is a viral infection caused by the parvovirus B19. Usually, it occurs in children between 5 and 15 years old. Transmission is mainly via droplets from respiratory secretions. Classic clinical findings include fever, a malar rash involving the cheeks with oral pallor (“slapped cheek rash”) that progresses into a maculopapular rash on the extremities (with a reticular or lacy-like appearance; usually on extensor surfaces). The disease usually resolves on its own, and symptom management should be given as indicated
