A. Staphylococcus aureus
B. Escherichia coli
C. Streptococcus pneumoniae
E. Pseudomonas aeruginosa
E. Streptococcus pyogenes
Answer and topic summary
The answer is A. Staphylococcus aureus
Folliculitis is essentially inflammation of the hair follicle or sebaceous gland. It is limited to the epidermis; it can be infectious or non-infectious. The most common pathogen indicated in infectious folliculitis is Staphylococcus aureus. Clinical features include pruritus, erythema located at the site of hair follicles, papules/pustules, etc. Diagnosis is often clinical. Management for mild folliculitis includes topical mupirocin or clindamycin; when extensive or severe disease is suspected, systemic antibiotic therapy is warranted (e.g., cephalexin or dicloxacillin; if MRSA is suspected, then oral Bactrim, doxycycline, or clindamycin).
