Hand-foot-mouth disease is a syndrome characterized by a rash (either vesicular, macular, or maculopapular) of the hands and feet. It is a viral exanthem that usually occurs during the summer and early autumn. The most common cause is coxsackievirus A16. Clinical features other than the rash include fever and painful oral lesions on the tongue and buccal mucosa. Diagnosis is usually made clinically. It is a mild clinical syndrome and resolution occurs in ~1 week. Fever and pain can be managed with ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
