IgA Nephropathy (Berger’s disease) is the most common cause of primary glomerulonephritis worldwide. The classic presentation is an episode of visible hematuria that occurs concurrently with (or within 1-2 days of) a mucosal infection, most often an upper respiratory infection. This “synpharyngitic” timing is the key feature that distinguishes it from post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis which also presents with hematuria after an infection, but there is a latent period; the nephritis typically develops 1 to 3 weeks after the streptococcal infection.
