Answer and topic summary

The answer is C. Rubella infection during pregnancy can result in congenital rubella syndrome

Rubella is a viral illness caused by the rubella virus. Transmission can occur through direct contact or via respiratory droplets. The disease is mild in children and adults, but infection during pregnancy can lead to miscarriage, fetal death, or congenital rubella syndrome. Clinical features include a maculopapular rash (usually begins on the face), fever, and prominent post-auricular and cervical lymphadenopathy. Patients may also have malaise, anorexia, and conjunctivitis. 50% of patients are asymptomatic. Diagnosis can be made by testing for rubella-specific IgM or rubella RT-PCR. Treatment is supportive.
