E. Excessive steroid usage
Answer and topic summary
The answer is C. Age-related weakening of the eyelid muscles
Ectropion is a condition defined by the outward turning of the eyelid margin. It is very common in older adults and occurs due to the weakening of muscles over time. The inner eyelid and conjunctiva can be exposed, red, and irritated. Patients may have excessively watery eyes, gritty/sandy eyes, sensitivity to light, etc. Initial management includes artificial tears and lubricating ointments. Surgery is the definitive treatment. If left untreated, a patient is at an increased risk of eye infections and corneal damage.
