Breast cancer is the 2nd most common cancer in females (risk is 13% in the United States.) The most common type of breast cancer is invasive ductal carcinoma. Risk factors include anything that increases exposure to endogenous estrogen (early menarche, late menopause, nulliparity, obesity), hormone replacement therapy, positive family history, smoking/alcohol, radiation therapy during childhood, etc. On physical exam you may notice a palpable mass that is non-tender, firm, and usually in the upper outer quadrant. Diagnosis includes ultrasound for women <30 and for women >30, mammography. Treatment depends on the cancer stage and also the histopathologic classification.
