Which of the following reduces mortality in patients with COPD?

A. Bronchodilators
B. Pulmonary rehab
C. Oxygen therapy
D. Tobacco cessation
E. Both C and D

Answer and topic summary

The answer is E. Both C and D

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a condition defined by an irreversible obstructive ventilatory defect. Tobacco abuse is the most common cause. Clinical features include chronic cough, phlegm production, dyspnea, tachypnea, end-expiratory wheezes, clubbing, barreled chest, decreased breath sounds, RV failure, and weight loss. Spirometry is needed for definitive diagnosis (FEV1/FVC < 70% with decreased FEV1). Treatment includes bronchodilators. Tobacco cessation and oxygen therapy help patients live longer.
