A. Adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma
B. Adenocarcinoma and small cell carcinoma
C. Stromal tumor and lymphoma
D. Stromal tumor and carcinoid tumor
E. None of the above

Answer and topic summary

The answer is A. Adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma

Adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) account for ~95% of esophageal cancers. The most common risk factors for SCC include smoking and alcohol; this is different from adenocarcinoma which is usually associated with Barrett’s esophagus due to gastroesophageal reflux disease. Clinical features of esophageal carcinoma include weight loss, progressive dysphagia, and anemia. Diagnosis is made by upper endoscopy with a biopsy. Treatment depends on the severity/type.
