The most common cause of hoarseness in adults is laryngitis. Acute laryngitis is very common and usually caused by an upper respiratory viral infection or acute vocal strain or allergies. It usually resolves with hydration, humidification, and voice rest. Steroids and antibiotics have not been found to be helpful in treating laryngitis.
