B. Intoxication
C. Vasovagal syncope
D. Orthostatic hypotension
E. Carotid sinus hypersensitivity
Answer and topic summary
The answer is C. Vasovagal syncope
Vasovagal syncope (also known as the “common faint” or reflex syncope) is a syncopal event that occurs due to a stressful trigger. It is self-limiting. It occurs due to a neural reflex (enhanced vagal activity + withdrawal sympathetic) that results in systemic hypotension, possible bradycardia, and/or peripheral vasodilation. It is the most common type of syncope and triggers include heat, the sight of blood, extended periods of standing, stress, and strain. Patients may have paleness, nausea, sweating, tachycardia, and vision clouding before the syncopal event occurs.
