Cataracts are opacifications of the lens of the eye. About half of the people over the age of 75 have cataracts. Clinical features include a loss of visual acuity that progresses slowly over many years. Patients may complain of glare and difficulty driving at night. Risk factors include cigarette smoking, steroid usage, UV radiation, exposure, diabetes, old age, and Wilson’s disease. Surgery is the definitive treatment. It is very effective!
