EENT Blueprint Lid Disorders: The Daily PANCE Blueprint

A 50-year-old female presents with a painless, non-tender nodule on her right eyelid. It has been there for a couple of months. Which of the following is the most likely diagnosis?

A. Chalazion
B. Hordeolum
C. Entropion
D. Ectropion
E. Melanoma

Answer and topic summary

The answer is A. Chalazion

The patient has a chalazion, which means “hail stone” in Greek. It usually presents as painless, localized eyelid swelling with redness/swelling of the adjacent conjunctiva. On physical exam, you may palpate a non-tender, hard, rubbery nodule. It is a clinical diagnosis. It is caused by obstruction of meibomian glands or glands of Zeis. Management includes warm compresses. Patients with unresolved lesions should be referred to an ophthalmologist for further management.
