A. Adequate pain management
B. Surgery consultation
C. Chest tube placement
D. Intubation
E. Thoracic full back brace
Answer and topic summary
The answer is A. Adequate pain management
Rib fractures are fairly common injuries. Most of the time, they occur after trauma. Other causes include coughing, sports, CPR, etc. Complications of rib fractures depend on case by case but could potentially include pneumothorax, hemothorax, splenic laceration, and pneumonia. CXR should be obtained in those with suspected rib fractures. Mainstay of management is pain control (to prevent splinting and subsequent atelectasis). Surgery consultation is warranted in those with a severe chest wall deformity, multiple severely displaced rib fractures, or flail chest.
