Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Most people who are infected have latent TB; however, if the immune system is compromised, the infection can be reactivated and active TB can occur. Clinical features of active TB include night sweats, anorexia, fevers, chest pain, weight loss, productive cough, hemoptysis, etc. The gold standard for diagnosis is mycobacterial cultures. All patients with active TB should be screened for HIV. Treatment includes four antibiotics: rifampicin, isoniazid, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide aka RIPE (all four antibiotics for 2 months, followed by just the first two, respectively, for 4 more months). Patients’ liver enzymes should be monitored while on these medications because they all can be potentially hepatotoxic.
